Is a "roomate" for my BP OK?

ken2j Jul 09, 2004 11:21 AM

Hi-

Last spring I acquired a captive-hatched normal male BP for my kids. He is now apppox 24" and doing great. He eats F/T mice regularly, & most importantly is an EXTREMELY friendly snake who seems to love being handled by my kids & their friends. In short, we expect him to welcome addition to our menagerie for the long term.

Recently, however, there has been some discussion about getting him a "girlfriend". My kids want to get a female BP and put her in the same enclosure with our current male. I am wondering if anyone has experienced any problems with doing something like this. My main concern is that I don't want to do anything that might change our current BP's sweet disposition, or be detrimental in some other way.

Thanks in advance,
Ken

One tip of advice is that you will have to quarentine the new snake for 1-3 months to make sure it is healthy. I personally am not a huge fan of multiple snakes (even the same type) in one enclosure. Snakes tend to be non social creatures, besides breeding time. But BPs have been kept together fine. Also you will need to seperated them at feeding time, or you could end up with an injured animal.

Hi Ken -

Actually, if you cage a male and female ball python together year round, you may find that he does, indeed, behave as if she is just a “roommate” and not a “girlfriend.”

Personally I think its a wonderful idea. I house 1 male and 3 females together and have never had any problems introducing them to one another. Actually I recently added a hatchling female to the cage and the other large female and her are wonderful together. The baby will follow the large female around, hide under her, you never see them seperated. I heard this behavior is unusual but when ever we take the large female out and then put her back she dartes to the baby and hides her.
