Rhac Rack ?s

treeboas Jul 09, 2004 11:34 AM

A friend of mine has offeres to build me a rack for my cresteds including the melamine(At his work they can build what they want with company materials). So the question is are what suggestions do you have for me as it is my first rack and will be aimed at crested geckos. So please post pics of racks and offer any advise you have. Also for cresteds when using heat tape do you use back heat or or bottum heat?

Thanks
Allen

My racks hold 58 quart Sterilites, which measure (approximately) 23" wide x 16" deep x 12" tall.

They're heated (only to 80 degrees) on one end with flexwatt heat tape. I use belly heat on some and back heat on others. I like the belly heat better as the animals really seem to use it more.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I couldn't tell from that particular photo how many tubs there are side by side in each rack. How many tubs high/wide would you recomend per rack?

Thanks
Allen

The overall measurement per section is 24" wide x 18" deep x 36" tall. Each section holds two 58 quarts and two 18 quarts (which are 9" tall as opposed to 12" tall) on the bottom shelf side by side.

The reason I built them in 36" tall sections was to make them easier to move (less weight) and more versatile. I can stack two of them and end up with four adult cages and four juvie cages and just under 6 feet high...meaning I can set something else (like a 10 gallon tank or supplies) on top of the racks if needed...or I can use them as stands for other cages.

Your racks are made of melamine correct? Does it handle the higher humidity alright?

AnthonyCaponetto Jul 10, 2004 02:52 AM

Yes...they're melamine.

I don't keep Cresteds in high humidity because it's not necessary. I do spray their cages, but that doesn't mean they're always humid. Check out my FAQ section for details.

Quite frankly, anyone who says differently listens to too much hear-say and should try thinking for themselves for once.

Sorry...I know that sounds harsh, but I don't know how else to say it.

I hadn't planed on making a gecko swamp or anything. I just give em a spray daily and didn't know how the melamine would hold up to it as I had heard about humidity issues with melamine. Oh yeah and I appreciate your multiple replies to this post.

Thanks
Allen
