would 8th of an inch or a quarter of an inch plexiglass be better?

i also am thinking of getting two sheets that are 4 1/2' by 2' for the 8' foot long cage

For the thickness, the 1/8 should be fine, but I would just go with whatever is cheapest. If the 1/4 isnt much more, you may want to check and see if it is any more rigid than the 1/8. If there is a lot of difference, it may be worth it. I have only worked with 1/8, but I frame mine in also.

Six inches of overlap on the sliding doors should be fine.
