Repta-moss safe for sm gecko?

violentxuprising Jul 09, 2004 12:49 PM

hi, i couldnt find any of the sphagum(sp?) moss anywhere, so i bought a bag of of the fluker's repta moss stuff. here is a link:
https://www.dynasite.net/site100-01/1001302/explore.cfm?STORE=Y&N=119&SN=180&CT=101&PG=101&O=1&W=STORE&P=N&S=1001302&U=1&SS=1&CR=Y&modify=0

i can't figure out if it is real or fake, or what kinda moss it is, it just says it's real moss, but not which kind. i was wondering if anyone has used this stuff and knows anything about it. i just replaced the paper towel in the wet hide with this stuff, so havent had time to observe the little guy's reaction to it yet(he is currently as far away from that as possible out of fear). so please let me know if it might cause impaction/indegestion/irration/torn skin/discomfort/resentment towards caretaker/trash talking/chain smoking... thanks.

ps: my guy(or gal?) is small, short of 4 in from head to tail, and as pink as pink lemonade.

I've tried that stuff before, and the only thing it's good for is fishing crickets out of the water bowl. lol It doesn't function well as a humid hide substrate because it's not compact enough to retain moisture.

I use sphagnum peat moss. If you put enough of it in the humid hide, plus have a smaller entrance hole to keep the humidity in, you only have to mist it every 2 or 3 days.

You can get a big bag of it from Home Depot for $3. If you don't have any Home Depots around, any gardening store should stock it.
