Worried about Sunny (kinda long, plz read)

riiotgrrl Jul 09, 2004 03:38 PM

My 3 year old girl has been really quite funny lately. I hae posted several other posts and now i am quite worried about her. I guess i just need some councling....Sunshine hassnt really been pooping like usual lately. She used to poop HUGE..now just 2 or 3 small poos a day. and for the past 2 weeks she really hasnt been eating much of anything. I was thinking that maybe she is gravid (??)...this would be my first time with a gravid iguana. She has been roaming the house way more than usual (she usually stays on her perch to bask...but it has been warmer so maybe thats why??) She likes to sleep on our bed and on my rattie cages (they havent bothered her at all...i really dont think they will, they are really good.). I have made a nesting site out of a large cardboard box and bed a beast, but she really hasnt had much interest it. She hasnt really been digging around either...maybe a bit.
Im just wondering what the possibilities could be? If anyone has had the same problem? My wedding is next saturday, so on top of that i am really stressed about sunshine. She is going to the vet on tuesday, but i dont know what they will do. (ive only had her since october, she was rescued, kept for a year and then given to me.) If she is eggbound, is there a shot they can give her? Will they operate (i dont have the money for an operation, i only make $8.00/hr....that is what is bothering me. Will most vets do payment plans??) what if something has impacted her?? OMG i just dont know, what if i have to put her down? I am so so scared. I am using an entire paycheck to have her checked out and xrayed, blood work, stool sample....i love my girl so much. i really need advice. please help. Her lights and diet have been VERY precice...no signs of metabolic probs, she gets her supplemnets and i have followed the ig diets from igs for dummies and the ultimate ig manual to a T....i am so scared and frustrated. I fugured you all could have ideas and council me. Thank you so much...

I do not have a female iguana, I wish I could help more...
Sunny looks so healthy and wonderful in that picture! And yes, many vets will do payment plans, especially for reptile owners who are as meticulous and caring as you seem to have been. Do you have a good relationship with your vet?

Honestly, I think it is a good sign that Sunny is pooping at all!
Hope everything gets better.

I would call and ask if they take payment plans. it really varies from vet to vet-the vet i go to now has an office sign "NO PAYMENT PLANS,ALL PAYMENT DUE UPFRONT" which I respect, but can put me in a tight spot. My counties emergency vet clinic doesnt take payment plans either, although last march they cut about $100 off my bill (even though I would have paid the original price in a payment plan). it really depends...good luck with her!! and for your wedding

I wish I could help, but both of mine are (were now that Messenger is gone) male. I know what it is like to spend all of your money on your "kids" and to stress about their every behavior. My vet does take payment plans, but that is usually for repeat clients. I think if you have been in at least a few times and have always paid on time then you should be fine.

I hope all goes well with her and make sure to post an update after her appointment on Tuesday.

Oh and congrats on getting married!

she could be gravid. they dont eat as much when they are. and since she is not eating as much she is not pooping as much. has she lost much weight? if you are willing to search and/or travel you may be able to find a vet that takes payment plans. just keep looking. asure them you can and will make the payments and your ig means the world to you. try not to stress too much. there are searches you can do on the web to find reptile vets. you should try that. i hope you find one that will help you out.

sounds like you have a gravid girl to me. you should up her calseum (dust her food) so she doesnt lose any by giving it to the eggs. also, it helps with binding.

but then agin i may be totaly wrong.

good luck at the vets

wish i was in a financhal spot to help you but i can offer you my prayers, and best wishes for your girl

It sounds like she is gravid. Hopefully the vet has experience
with gravid females. He/she should be able to palpate the
ovaries/eggs depending on how far along she is. Mine stopped
eating completely as she continued in her gravid state. The
main concern is egg binding which is common for igs (especially
rescues) in captivity. You should start saving because if she
cannot lay the eggs you will need her to have surgery to remove
them and spay her. If she becomes eggbound, she most likely
will die. Once you have her spayed with pay the fee, you won't
have to worry about that again.

Beanie had to have emergency surgery and didn't eat for a year
following that episode ( I syringe fed her). Don't take this
too lightly and keep a close eye on her.

Good luck
Linda

Thank you all for replying. You all made me feel much better. I appreciate that greatly. Sunny was looking really bloated the past few days. Today not so much tho. hmm..she has been pooping in strange places too. She would usually go under the toilet, but now she is going in the kitchen and even a bit on her basking pearch. I dunno....i think that she may have eaten a bit, although i am not quite sure. Wouldnt she look gravid?? she really doesnt, but i cant tell....

She is not eating and refusing even mango and squash and dates and spring mix. She turns her nose up to everything...and i think she is losing weight....... AND now my leo is missing too. This really sucks.
