Dick Bartletts's 6/18 post from below:

that in the recently released _Snakes of the United States and Canada_ (Smithsonian) Carl Ernst is again recognizing the Outer Bank kingsnakes as a subspecies.

Does Ernst site any new genetic research or is he relying on past research ? I would love it to be true and I do know the state of N.Carolina recognizes it as a sub-species so as to protect it on the Outer Banks. I was under the impression the original biologist(s) who described this animal as a sub used very shaky reasoning and had only one dead animal to study from.
