STRANGE PASTEL HATCHLINGS

Blake Jul 09, 2004 04:50 PM

This morning I caught the last of my Pastel hatchlings leaving their eggs. The Pastel father, pictured, was bred to my oldest normal female. She gave me 9 perfect eggs that pipped at 55 days and left their eggs on day 57. The odd thing is, there were only three Pastels but all of the 'normals' appear to be half way between a Pastel and normal. This is my sixth clutch of the season and I have many normals but none even come close to these guys. The mother has bred for us in the past and never produced anything special but this was the first clutch I recieved from this guy, I just got him in a trade at the start of the breeding season. I will try to get pictures of these guys this weekend but I was just wondering if anyone has seen this before. Thanks.

Blake

Do you know anything about the parents of the male? Did he come from pastel X pastel?

If there are variations in quality actually within the pastel gene (as opposed the variations in quality between lines coming from genes other than the pastel gene) maybe he is actually a super (i.e. homozygous pastel) but one of his pastel genes is better than the other so he produces two grades of pastels and no normals bred with a normal.

I have a male that is a "normal" hatchling from one of the first few Pastel breedings in the US. He is very yellow with a very yellow tummy. I have not bred him. We have yet to determine if he is a pretty normal or an "ugly" Pastel.

Is it at all possible that he could be co-dom for two different lines of pastel.Which are NOT compatable ?
Hence the two grades of "pastel" hatchlings?

Just a thought.... anyone?

I don`t think mine is. At the time mine was hatched there were no known adult females and darned few males.
