New to Blue Tongues. . . . . . Info, please

fisherk2 Jun 20, 2003 11:43 PM

Hi,

I'm not new to herps, but I am to blue tongue skinks, and I was hoping someone could give me some specifics on a few things. First, how long does it take them to reach full-size? I can't seem to find any info on that. Also, how big of an enclosure does one adult need. Some people say a 20L aquarium is enough and others say at least a 60 gallon. I'm thinking about getting a BTS so any other info or websites you can suggest would be great.

Thanks a lot!!!
Amanda

Blue-tongue skinks are absolutely one of the best pet lizards out there. Also, my hat's off to you for doing the research on the animal before you get it. Many people do it backwards.
A good starting point for general information on BTS husbandry is Craig Loose's The Blue Tongue Pages (the link is at the bottom of any of his posts). Read the entire website and ask as much as you need. We are all happy to help as much as we can.

I have talked to many on the cage size subject. And came to a conclusion that a 20l would be ok for a baby or juvy up to 12". THe smallest I would use for a adult from the info given would be a 40 breeder. Somthing like 4'x18" would be better. Since new to Bts I cannot tell u the average growth rate. But with all the herps I have had with proper diet and heat they grow very rapid.
Hope this helps.

I have seen BTS reach adult size Before they make it to their first birthday party. However, they are still not fully grown. They will grow for the next two years after that. After 3 years of age the growth rate is much more reduced, and not really substantial.
