tail nips- what would you do?>

dmlove Jul 09, 2004 08:07 PM

Well, i was just wondering how many people out there, if they found a great colored beardie, would buy one with a tail nip. I am not offering anything for sale, just wondering as i have been keeping all of my tail nipped dragons, which all seem to have the best personality, because I am afraid that there really isnt anyone out there that would buy one (Im not asking if you would now, im just saying, hypothetically speaking, if you were searching for your first dragon, or second or whatever) how many would consider a tail nipped one?

Oh, and as for an update, 3 of my tail nipped ones are getting a small amputation so the decay does not continue spreading via the infection. I do have one that is SO CUTE! But i feel so bad for him. He got half of his tail bit off Already, plus the amputation, probably leaving him with 1/4 of his tail. However, he is probably the tamest dragon around, and i love him! He has some great coloration too, and holds his own now in the holdback cage! Ill post pictures of the little guy soon, hes the only one that will literally jump on your hand when you put it in there. Im most probably keeping him. Just seems like those little pitiful ones get at your heart.

Well Thanks for the replies in advance!

I just bought one with a tail nip. He was so friendly. They had plenty of "normal" beardies, but he won my heart. I'm sure a lot of other people would feel the same way. I named him stumpy!

Yes they do sell! Last year I grouped them up and had a scratch & dent sale, as a group. They went quicker than most others. lol
Someone who plans on breeding them doesn't really care if there is a nip or not. However most will pretend like it's way out of their league to accept anything other than a perfect dragon (trying to bring the price down even more).
I know I'll probably get some flack for saying that but it's true. (Not everyone is like that, but there are many out there)

I too have a nipped up guy who I plan on keeping for the rest of his life. "Captain Hook" He lost his entire front hand, several toes on his rear foot, and his tail was bitten several times. I have noticed that once one gets bitten, it becomes a target for more. (at least while it's injured) I wonder if it's like dogs or other animals, where they know they are weaker?

Anyway, here is our buddy, Capt.. Hook

when I go BD shopping, tail nips are my first choice. The tail does not mke the animal. I would rather save a few bucks as long as they have good genes

BTW Capt Hook is adorable

I agree, the pet people might not be as eager to get them but breeders love nips. When we go out looking for new blood lines, we intentionally target nips. I look at it as getting a better animal for the same price as a lesser animal that happens to be whole. I'm after genetics not perfection, missing tails or toes has no impact on breeding.

I got one who though not nipped had a bend in his tail as a birth defect. His name is Bent and I am not going to breed him, for fear of defective genes, but he has a great personality and great color. A pet is one who speaks to your heart no matter his/her condition. How many Tom cats with torn ears or Mutts that are defintely scragggly find their way into our hearts instead of the pure breed, stuck up kind who are perfect. ENJOY your animals is one of the first rules of havinfg an animal. Another is to make sure they are as healthy and happy as possible. Sounds to me you are doing both.

People will buy tail nip dragons because tail nip is not a genetic thing and the offspring will obviously have full tails. I would recommend mabye lowering the price on them a little bit because of the missing tail tips.

I honestly would still buy it if it was a minor nip, and the breeder had cared for it properly. Keeping it really clean, possibly seperating it from the others, or figuring out who the nipper is and seperating that one out. If it happened to be the dragon I went for, then it wouldn't bother me. The lowered price also might be appealing to me.
If I was breeding, and the defect in the tail was purely nongenetic (as a nip is) I would buy the dragon if it was the color I was looking for. Although, I might not order it online. My fear would be that it might be weaker than the other dragons with perfect tails because it was the one targeted by one that was bigger and stronger. I might just ask to see it eat.
Breeding or not, I would be more likely to buy if it was a breeder I had dealt with positively before, but that's always true. Perfect or imperfect, I would be more likely to do business with someone I had dealt with before, rather than someone who I had never purchased from before.
