I do not understand the reasoning here, if you do not want to spend $100 on the animal, are you not willing to spend $100 at the vet when he gets sick?

You could solve a lot of problems just by buying a captive bred, mouse eating Eastern Hognose. I know that there are a couple of people on this forum that have some for sale. This way you will not be taking toads and salamanders out of their habitat either, since they are just as deserving of conservation as hognoses! By the way, despite what other people will tell you, a significant portion of a wild Eastern hognoses diet consists of rodents and other non amphibian foods.

first off i said i didnt wanna spend the 100 dollars because i didnt have it second i said i didnt wanna buy the snake because he was really mean he was hissin and striking at the glass on the tank before u even came close to him and he was a few yrs old i want a baby and now that i have the money i would buy one if they had one but ive never seen hognose snakes at petstores..so before u go saying how someone should go about something read the posts better and not going and replying with senseless ranting and i kno that im gonna have to pay to take care of parasites etc and im willing to do that with the money i have just wasnt ready to buy a nasty snake that was a few yrs old

o and u said i can solve prob by bying a captive bred that eats mice well even some captive breds dont eat mice and the one at the petstore was obviously wildcaught so it wouldnt have solved problems

>>second i said i didnt wanna buy the snake because he was really mean he was hissin and striking at the glass on the tank before u even came close to him
---Hahaha... That doesn't mean the snake is mean! Don't you know that that's their defense mechanism? That's what's so great about hognose - they don't bite, but they act tough. Try reading up on hognose at hognose.com. They are great snakes. You shouldn't get an eastern hognose WC or CB you should try to start out with a CB western/plains hognose (heterodon n. nasicus) that’s eating unscented f/t. Do a little research and maybe go to a reptile show and pick up a western for around 50 bucks. If you're not willing/can't spend that much money then you may not be able to take care of an animal like a hognose. Good luck.

i know its there way of scaring would be predators but my point is that was a WC western because if it was CB it wouldnt be doing it anymore because it was atleast 2 yrs old and by now it would be used to being in captivity because thats wat it was born into

I have three or four cb's (all diff. ages) that are fussier than any I have seen in the wild. They hiss and strike and even gape somtimes. One of them plays dead every time I throw a f/t pink in for it.

snappy Jul 11, 2004 08:09 PM

doh once again i forgot to post something...

BTW ive been researching hognose snakes for almost a yr thats y im so interested and idk where theres a reptile show near me

If you have the money now, commit to buying a nice CB western off the classifieds. It’s a real simple answer to your troubles.

P.s. I have a CB '00 male W. hog that still hisses and strikes. - He’s fine to handle though.

I am looking for an Eastern hognose for use in education programs about conservation. You mention that you might know some people who breed them? I would appreciate knowing how to contact them. Thanks much
