Few boa questions...

amy Jul 09, 2004 10:35 PM

ok my friend recently aquired a very nice (IMHO) red tail boa..it is a five year old female and was bought as a columbian but to me she doesn't look like any normal columbian i have seen here is a pic:

any ideas what she might be or is she just normal...

also how large should she be at five years in weight and length so i can be sure she is healthy as theh guy who previously owned her didn't know too much about boas beyond their basic care

Any help would be appreciated Thanks

That's AWESOME! Definitely outside the realm of normal. She has great color. She looks to be in good shape. Boas grow at different rates... depending on genetics, husbandry and feeding rates. So, my answer will be vague. At 5yrs she could be between 5-9ft and 12-35 lbs. I'd say as long as you can't see vertebrae, loose stools or lethargy... you got a good deal. I would be more than happy to add that to my collection... Great pick... and with all beautiful normals, should you decide to rid yourself of such beauty... you know where to come.
Regards,
Ray

That is an exceptional Boa constrictor imperator.
In other words "YOWZA, What a Beauty!"

I love that boa, keep an eye out for weak muscle tone, wheezing, runnny and/or smelly stools and discharge from the mouth, but it looks very healthy to me.

Please don't call it a pastel though, despite the possibility that it may be a "pastel", whatever that means.

"IF" There is a "genetic" pastel, then we don't want to confuse the issue by saying anything exhibiting those traits is a pastel (without knowledge of it's ancestry).

I maintain that pastels are a myth, and one that is not maliciously, nor nefariously perpetrated, but misunderstood.

No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful.

Looks like some advanced blister disease on the belly...but other than that it looks awesome.....

I agree with Jeremy....Pastels are are just boas with some really well chosen alleles...

Take care, Chris Olson

isnt like that of ball pythons, its not a proven trait such as albino or hypo, I could be wrong? Thats the way I have always understoud it, I never seen an issue with throwing the pastel term around in boas like you see some doing it with imported balls and what not, correct me if I am wrong

Brown/orange swollen scales originating from her vent. Yes it's treatable...but it takes along time. Anti-fungal spray (not the powder) works over time. Keep her enclosure spotless/santitized.
She is plenty big enough to breed...

Good luck, Chris Olson
