Sex change? What do you think? Pic

aliceinwl Jun 21, 2003 12:01 AM

I have a leopard gecko (Catundra) who is 8 years old. I purchased her as an adult. In 2001 she laid 13 eggs. Last year she developed buldges, stopped laying eggs, and started mating with females. When I placed her with a male after her transformation he beat her up. All the eggs laid by the females she has mated with have been duds.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Here is a pic of the buldges, as you can see she never developed pores to go with them.

WOW!!!! i've never seen anything like that, or heard of it. it is possible though, i assume. many other herps can change sex, most notably many amphibians. some fish can too. but in leopard geckos, what the!!!

Wow.. that is incredible! I've never heard of a leopard changing gender, but I guess most things are altogether possible. Are you feeding it anything that may be giving it male hormones that built up over time or anything? Just a thought.

Anyway, ILoveBlackFrancis.. Awesome! I just read your sig and checked out your name. I love Frank Black. I'm the hugest Pixies and Catholics fan. Respond if you get this, I always love to meet more

I am no liar.. okay, maybe I'm the biggest fan in Miami?

Anyway, where are you from? I'm 20/f/Miami. I have a leopard gecko, a bunch of frogs (mostly tree frogs), fish, and a wonderful dog.

this wouldn't be evolution. this may be adaptation, but not really, cos' there is no need for it. it just, doesn't seem right. are you sure thats the same gecko, lol.

I had always house my females with a male (Caesar). The year this happened, however, I removed Caesar in the fall so that I could introduce a new albino male in the spring. Catundra was always the dominant female so i was wondering if she "rose" to the occaision.

I'm sure it's the same leo because she was my first female (when I started out it was just her and Ceasar) and she laid 4 eggs. She has laid over 40 eggs since I've had her.

The only problem with this theory is that she isn't fertile.

Set, the dark gecko on top, is one of Catundra's first daughters.

Maybe you better keep an eye on that daughter just in case! lol...
Might become a family tradition. ^_~
Anyway...That's still something strage and unheard of where I'm concerned tho.. Wow.

This could be an evolutionary change on the part of this gecko(changes in the genetics of the animal so it utilizes hormones later in development). adaptation is evolution as long as it is passed on to the next generation. If this gecko can sucessfully mate later on with a female it is evolution. But it was a joke, that poor female was turned into a male, how horrible!!!!!!

armiyana Jun 21, 2003 12:54 AM

Did she/he lay the eggs before you got him/her? Or was in your care when it did?

I've never heard of that happening in leos...is there any possiblitly of a mix-up somewhere? O_o

That's one for the records.

"She's" laid over 40 eggs while in my care. All the eggs laid by her females have been duds. I placed her in with a pair of proven girls this year. They have both laid 6 clutches of duds apeice.

I'm now paranoid about leaving any of my tanks maleless, and having my females convert.

Here's another pic of my "she-male"

Proven breeder female that was in her 3rd breeding season. I put her in with one of my Bell albino males and one night I heard quite a bit of ruckus coming from their box. When I opened it to check the "female" was bleeding from her tail and the male albino had bite marks all over his tail and body. Whne I was checking the female out to make sure she was ok I noticed that "she" was now a "he"! I have not tested "his" fertility out but plan on it later this yea.

Pretty amazing stuff!
