Wanted to hear some personal Sand Impaction Stories BREEDER INPUT IS APPRECIATED

alphadragon Jul 10, 2004 04:20 AM

I was just interested in hearing Childrens Sifted Sand impaction stories. I have not dealt with it myself so I am very interested in hearing personal experiences with impaction and the circumstances that led to it. I realize this subject has been beaten to death but I feel it is important to read some first hand experiences with this problem. Please only reply if you had the animal necropsied and found that the cause of death was CHILDRENS SIFTTED PLAYSAND.
Thanks,
Randy

Couple of holdbacks (pic taken about a month ago) these guys are curretnly 12.5 and 13.5 inches and 89 and 95 grams at 11 weeks (yellow dragon w/ red stripes: head is in shed).

also wanted to comment on here, you asked only for breeders comments of their experiences. I don't think breeder that have lost babies to sand impaction are going to speak up here...... what would that do with people on here that bought dragons from them in the past that were raised with the ones they lost?

Also, trying to remember breeder that still post here, I do not know any that use sands as a substrate for babies. I sent you a URL of pictures and xrays of sand impactions I have collected over the past year.

Also, I have been gathering data from lab and necropsy reports on bearded dragons from vets in the US and have over 100 now. Trying to detemine the most common cause confirmed of early deaths in bearded dragons...... from those reports we had to break them down to young dragons and adult dragons, as there are very distinct differences in causes of death in baby dragons that are not found in adult dragons as prime causes.

In baby dragons, impactions ranked as the 3rd highest cause, behind dehydration and parasites, where it did not appear on any of the adult top six causes.
