Green Trees Hatching

Corey Woods Jul 10, 2004 09:34 AM

The Green Trees hatched out a couple weeks ago......I've just been slow getting pics up. Some of you may recall that my female GTP didn't lay her eggs in her nest box......she decided to scatter them all over the back of the cage.....which quickly made me realize that maternal incubation wasn't going to be possible. Anyways, 12 eggs were laid (100% fertility) but after 2 weeks of incubation 3 eggs died which put me down to 9 fertile eggs. I incubated the eggs at 30.5 C (87.1F) for the full incubation. I decided not to fluctuate the temps of the eggs as in my experience the more you mess with someone the more likely you are to kill them. I pipped all 9 eggs at 49 days, however, the first ones didn't start sticking their heads out until day 53. This added delay in "hatching" was probably due to the constant temps throughout incubation so hatching should have been a little longer than if I had turned up the temps to 31.7 C for 4 weeks.

Anyways, all 9 babies were alive on day 49. 2 fully crawled out of the egg and died and 2 poked out their heads about 1.5 inches and then died. However, the remaining 5 are out and doing great! All 9 babies were yellow.

This is a joint venture between Lance and Peggy Townsand and myself. My male was not big enough to breed so their male bred my female from Feb-March 2004. It'll be interesting to see what these guys look like when they grow up!

Enjoy,
Corey

Congrats on the hatchlings Corey. Five healthy babies is much better than zero. If you don't mind me asking, how big was your male. The reason I ask is, a lot of people underestimate the breeding potential of small males. I have a small male that sire a fertile clutch of 19 eggs this season. He weighs in at a healthy 380 grams on empty. He is an excellent breeder and is a very placid and tame animal......except when he's in presence of a female. I also have another male of the same size and weight that was breeding recently. Again, a calm gentle animal unless he had a female to defend.

I know the general community recommends males to be at least 800 grams, but this is absolutely false info. Some males will never reach 800 grams in a lifetime, just as some females will not be much over 1000 grams if that.

Anyway, enough of my ramble. I just wanted to share a little info with you and congradulate you on the babies.

Take care.
