justcage Jul 10, 2004 02:19 PM

Hello I am breeding Rats and mice now in a larger setup. I ned a large amount of food for a small price. I am currently using ol roy dog food and sunflower seeds. Is the Mazuri products better or can I just stay with what I am using? I want to be as healthy as possible. Thank You,

Dog food is for dogs, not rats. Mazuri 6F is what you need.

Hi –

I don’t breed rats now, but when I did I used 5L42 Rodent Breeder Chow, but I see that’s not listed. The product would be 5M30 now, I guess (6% fat like mykee said). I never outbred my little colony and kept breeding the same stock year after year and got great production – huge litters and always healthy animals. The few times I tried dog chow, it was clearly inferior.

If you want to breed mice, however, you really need to go with the product with 9% or 11% fat for good production.
