Ginpy Hatchling?

lizgirl17 Jul 10, 2004 06:40 PM

I just went to get a hatchling out of the incubator and noticed there is something wrong with his front left foot. It looks like there is function in the leg, but when it walks he walks on top of his hand, if that makes any sense. He was incubated between 83-86 degrees just like every other hatchling that has come out normal. This is the first ever hatchling from one of my girls. The father has never had a problem with his offspring before since I have had him. Has any one seen this before? Will it gain the use of the foot as it gets older/stronger? It's very spunky and pretty fast for only having three good feet. Its really small though. The eggs was smaller than its clutch mate's too. Well if anyone has had this happen to them, or has any tips I'd really appreciate it! I'll try to get a pic up soon!
Thanks!
Emily

Okay when I went back to takesome pics I noticed that both the front feet were wierd. They are turned in like its pigeon toed or something. They are lind of bent. Neither foot has very much function but the little guy still gets around. When he starts eating I'm going to make suer he gets extra calcium supplements, any other ideas?
Thanks,
Emily

Weird.. How old is it?

When they're in the egg, they're all rolled up in a ball, kinda - the whole fetal position thing. Human babies are normally pigeon-toed for a while, at least until their legs are strong enough to straighten out. It happens because their legs are kind of curved from the cramped space in the mom's womb.. There's a better way to explain it - that's just what I remember my daughter's doctor telling me when I was concerned about her feet.

SO it might be that they'll straighten out - and they should, if it's only a day or so old. It looked newborn. Keep us up to date!

Thanks. It just hatched out today. Its really small. A lot smaller than its siblings. It's wierd too because the father is about ten inches or more and wheighs over 60g. He's BIG. So The size suprized me.It's clutchmate hasn't hatched yet but I see if anything is wierd with that one. I'll post updates and stuff too.
Thanks,
Emily

Correct me if i'm wrong but aren't bowed legs a sign of MBD?

Lucien Jul 11, 2004 03:12 AM

No.. you're right. Bowed legs like that can be an indicator of Calcium Deficiency in the mother as well as the babies. I'd suggest upping the calcium intact.. maybe get a bit of liquid calcium supplement with no D3 and give it to both the hathling and the mother. If caught early enough the defect can reverse itself given the proper care and treatment.

I was thinking MBD but the mother, actually all my lizards, are supplemented year round with calcium and all have calcium dishes in their tanks. I ahve also seen her lick the calcium out of the dish. I'll add a little more with some pinkies or something though (for the mom of course) if I see no improvement I''l contact my vet about the shots.
Thanks,
Emily

Yah cuz im sure if you correct it soon he'll be a very healthy and hella cute little guy. (cuz he's very adorable right now by the way, good job)
Hatchlings' bones should be more easily correctable than a full grown lizard.
