Preparing for the FLAMES, but.........

cavyscandy Jul 10, 2004 07:10 PM

OK,

I know the flames are coming, but who I really want to hear from is people who have tried or who have heard of anyone trying it, and the good and/or bad.
OK here it is:
Could a C-B&W tegu and a Savannah Monitor live together? They are almost the exact size, tegu's (Ace) tail is longer, but body wise near exact. They are pretty young. The Savannah use to lived with another Savannah, that was somewhat larger than her, before and they got along great. Neither animal is aggressive, neither have ever tried to bite.

Here is a picture of Sassy's (Savannah) cage. it is 12 foot long, 5 feet wide and 4 feet high.

And I am sure the next hurt or abandonded (ect.) animal any one we know finds will soon live here too! Plus me, Hubby, our 3 kids, and 4 sisters that are not ours by blood. One BIG happy family

thats 12' long? i have a 3, 12' cages for my monitors and tegus. yours doesnt look near as big. anyway, even if they did get along. they need different setups. best to just get two cages. And why would you want to risk something happening?

I have to agree, seperate is better. I've had two tegus that needed to be seperated. Your tegu and savannah need different heat/humidity set ups. By the way, nice looking tank. Are your doors hinged plywood with plexiglass screwed to it??? That's what I was thinking of doing for my snakes. More excape proof.

Yes thats hinged plywood, I used 1X2s as bracing and to close off the top and sides and to help support the windows.

The view maybe off since I had to take the picture somewhat diagonally. But to help with the perspective, the windows are both 3.5 feet by 2 feet Plexiglas, screwed in with 1 bys on the inside. And I just measured her log and it is just over 4 feet long. My reason for asking is because she has so much room, temps and humidity are great, she has several basking temps, and on dirt side stays about 84. And Ace is in a 3.5 x 2.5 x 2.5, and a bit harder to keep a good variety. So I thought I would check and see if anyone had done it. will be end of summer before we can build another huge cage. So that is why I was asking. If it was possible, it would take minor tweaking to make it a wonderful environment for both, and felt this would be the place to find people who would know for sure if it was possible. I know a few on here have their iguanas and monitors living together, so maybe some had tegu and monitor.
I hope this explains the "why" i asked. Thank you for your input.

especially when they have not grown up together...it can be done, but of course there is risk involved. I guess it would have to do with each ones personality. If they get along, and the environment is acceptable for both species, I don't think the animals will care as much as people care. Feeding time can pose a problem.

With that said, I have kept monitors of the same species together, but have not tried what you are asking.

I admit I've never tried it, but I do have two suggestions if you decide to try it.

First, get the two acquainted on neutral ground under careful supervision. If they can't tolerate each other in a whole room, they sure won't make it as roommates.

Second, if you decide to put them together, you better clean out and disinfect the entire enclosure and change all substrata and move all the furnichings around so that nothing, and I mean nothing, is where it was. Otherwise, the one whose cage it was will have a territorial or scent advantage over the new cagemate, which may well cause problems even if they get along outside the cage.

I realize this is almost as much work as building the second cage you were trying to avoid right now, but I think it's the only safe way. While I've never used it with different species, it works to keep multiple males of the same species coexisting peacefully (as long as there are no females). Good luck,

Leslie

Thank you
I plan of give then time free roaming in room (supervised of course) even if this is not possible. and as for cleaning the whole cage and such. that i can to. Just cant afford another big cage with 7 kids starting back to school in less than a month. will be a while.
