Can I put baby boas in a 5 foot cage?

MountainLyon Jul 10, 2004 09:39 PM

I might get two or three baby boas (almost certainly hogs) and a large cage for each. I know young boas can be kept together, but which is preferable?

Is it common to put a boa straight into a cage that it will spend it's whole life in, or do most of you use a couple different size cages as your boas grow?

Any advice appreciated, same goes for my two questions that are yet unanswered, halfway down the page.

You can keep a smaller boa in a large enclosure, but I do not suggest it. It leaves more issues such as stress, and if the snake hides constantly it may be too jumpy to keep itself properly thermoregulated.

My personal enclosure progression goes from sweater box tub then underbed tub, then move upto the adult size enclosure (usually the animal is at the 1 1/2-2 year age before moving into its final enclosure. (and sometimes if it is a larger specimen will be moved again if it outgrows its home)

on Boaphile cages...yet. The plan is now to get 3 hogs. I'll probably get 3 10 gallon aquariums for now.

I plan to build a 24" pedestal/rack that the 3 big cages will go on, with a shelf or two underneath for the babies. Maybe I'll build it a year in advance of buying the cages so I can house the first 3 in tubs. I better figure out what I'm doing because I'm about to start buying boas!

Thanks again for the help, I hadn't been getting any responses lately.

You may want to look at building a rack for them or possibly getting a few of the smaller sized barrs cages (I don't suggest using aquariums, as they are harder to maintain proper temps and humidity in)

Good luck with what you decide on.

Also the lack of responses tends to go in spirts in these forums unfortunately too much time is spent kissing butt and bragging, compared to trying to help..
