Filter suction

diggy415 Jul 10, 2004 10:16 PM

I will be building me a viv for future frogs, i plan on making it half land and half water(35gl). I have those filters that don't need much water to suck the water from (2" the box says) can pantyhose be used to cover it up so a frog won't get sucked onto it? I could block it off, but don't know how persistant and the habits of frogs are as far as getting between rocks etc should i try that. Any sugg? Im also impressed with all the pictures i see to help me get an idea for firebellies. Let me know of the pros and cons of the tanks also as you've found out throughout the years of having them. Then I can send in my pic's

I've wrapped filter fiber around the intake of submersible filters with a rubber band before and it's worked well. I would assume pantyhose or any porous material would work equally well. Most submersible filters come with a grate already installed that prevents the filter from sucking up anything large. I usually add the filter fiber to prevent feeder insects from being sucked into the intake (it clogs everything up) rather than the amphibian. A healthy fire-bellied toad should be able to prevent itself from getting sucked into the intake of your average submersible filter anyway so if it's the toad you're are worried about don't be too concerned. Good luck,
