What would cause a rats head to start kinking to the left side ??

wolfcharmer Jul 11, 2004 12:30 AM

One of my adult female breeder rats head has been gradually pivoting to her left. Its not the position of looking left. Her left ear is actually tilted toward the ground. What would cause this gastly deformity? She lives in a clean container, has fresh water (sometimes with vitamin supplements) and eats 50% premium dog food and 50% rodent blocks. Could this be a calcium deficiency or a disease? The odd thing is that I had the same thing happen to a male mouse and I had to gas him. I'm sure I will soon have the gas the female rat, as it looks very uncomfortable. I just don't want this to happen to any of my other rodents.
Thanks for any information.

She either has a tumor or an inner ear infection. Yes, there can be an infection with no other 'signs'. If it has been going on more than a few days you can treat her with antibiotics but the head tilt may be permanent.
