Herping the Pecos River

eliotstone Jul 11, 2004 09:12 AM

Dear All:
I just got back from a three day herpetological survey of the Pecos River that runs through the National Park. Lots of rapids and lots of Canyon Lizards. I am helping two herpetologists survey the park and GPS map any species of herp we come across. It has been great so far. We have found Bairds, longnose, coralsnakes, thread snake, a huge gophersnake, and a great plains skink. I will be working on this project for the remainder of the season and I hope to find an alterna and lepidus. We had some perfect habitat night before last along the river, but to no avail. I will post pictures soon, and hopefully we will come across an alterna or two.

Hey E,
Threadsnake you say? Wouldn't have guessed that one. But I'm quite familiar with those canyon lizards... they are out of control! Them and goats. Just make sure you turn in all of those arrowheads you find! Have fun...

I am helping with survey here in southeast NM. Been finding a few cool things and some things that weren't found in last year's survey...
