chlorine?

ryanfish2002 Jun 21, 2003 03:11 AM

This is probably a really stupid question but i thaught I'd ask anyway, I have a 16" American alligator who has a wonderful setup but I was wondering if I allowed it to take a swim in my pool would it hurt it? I dont want the gator to live in the pool I just thaught it migh be good for it to swim in it once a day or less but I am afraid to put it in the pool because I dont know how the chlorine would affect him.

At the levels used in swimming pools (6-7 ppm(?)), the chlorine won't hurt the gator any more than it hurts humans.

Of more concern, however, is the stress on the little guy. In the wild, a gator that size will be hiding along the sides of the waterways, very seldom emerging from the cover of vegetation. This is because they are prey to a large range of animals that will attack from, land, water, and air. By putting this little guy out in an open pool of water, you have removed all of it's natural security and it will be stressed out. Swimming in the pool will not be a positive experience for it.
