My snake - yellow rat?

honeydancer Jul 11, 2004 11:20 AM

I'm kind of new to this whole snake thing! I was given this snake after the guy didn't want to take care of him anymore. I was told he was a yellow rat, but at a recent expo I saw yellow rat snakes and they didn't really look like him... Does any one have any ideas? Here's a few pix:

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v324/JessItUp/snake1.jpg -- this shows his pattern really nice.

He's about 17 inches long, he's really docile and mellow. I've been giving him frozen (well they're thawed when I give them to him! *lol*) fuzzies and he's had no problem with that.

Any info would be great! Thanks!

He's a young rat snake - they are blotched and Yellow's develop the color, and the stripes as they get older. Yours may well be in the middle of its color and pattern change. Yellow ratsnakes interbreed with a number of other subspecies across their range, so yours may be more black (green), grey, or orange (everglades).

They are great pet snakes, fun to keep and good feeders generally. Read all you can about North American rat snakes for more info!

Thank you SO much!! I'll be doing more research. He's been great so far and I love having him around.
