Types of beans

triad Jul 11, 2004 12:30 PM

Ok I've read some of the posts that said they eat beans. Well I do not know what type of beans (besides green) to buy and prepare for them. The omnivores that are at my house are: 2 bearded dragons (1 adult 1 juvie) 2 mali uromastyx (around 2 1/2 yrs old) and 2 Saharan uromastyx (they are the new ones I got, they're 1 1/2 yrs old). I know the saharans I got ate Green Beans but I don't know what types of regular beans you guys get for yours. And is there a way to entice the saharans appetites? I just got them on Friday and am trying to get them to eat more so they feel more comfortable.

Thank you all in advance

A: Bee's pollen found at health food stores can stimulate a Uro's appetite though with more frequent use will become decreasingly effective. B: If you buy a 15(16) bean soup with no additives your lizards would probably like it, just make sure you make it into manageable pieces for them. My Mali loves lentils, they're like crack to her. Just my two (or three) cents.

Hi,

Lima beans are not a big hit with Mali's (Skunks don't like them either). We haven't experimented with other types of beans to advise you.

Hope this helps,
Sincerely,
Brian

Archie (my Mali) may be an exception, but he really likes lima beans, in fact I make sure to buy the brands of mixed vegetables that specifically have them! Like I said though, he is a bit odd... (and no, the frozen veggies are not his main staple of food...)

Correction:

We have one male that loves limas. Carrots are a pass-over item as well.

Thanks. I'll try to see if I can find some they will eat. I just want them to gain more weight so they're healthy so they might be able to breed next summer. In the letter I got from Doug Dix he said most uro's are poor eaters the first week or so after transport, especially males. So I'll see if I can find something they might try to eat. Hopefully they will start eating soon.

If you are referring to the "dry" bean mix, I use split green peas, split yellow peas, lentils, bee pollen and juvenile iguana food. You can also add millet. As far as fresh/frozen, mine will eat green beans, yellow beans and sometimes a squashed lima bean.
