Are real vines safe if properly sterilized?

zag Jul 11, 2004 04:36 PM

There are a lot of vines on the land where I live, and I was wondering if they would be a safe alternative to those fake vines you can buy. They look as thought they are dead, but I was worried they might be poisonous or something. I've always used real driftwood for my bearded dragons' enclosures, which makes for a nice natural look. If anyone responds, I was also wondering what solution to use to clean them - it's been a while since I've had to do that. Thanks.

I use real vines, they dont have those spongy fake vines in the wild, so why use them in their cages? I use plain antibacterial soap and water to clean the vines.

Theyre fine to use as long as they are on a safe plant list somewhere (someone please post a link, i'm bad with links). Just use a bleach/soap/water blend of about 1:1:10 and scrub down the vines with a stiff brush to get all the dirt and grime off, I usually find the water egts very black when i scrub the vines down, just scrub until the water runs clear. Make sure it's well rinsed. Use cable ties and eyelets or screws to attatck to the frame of the cage (unles the cage is metal).

They make for very pretty cage furnishings, i used them exclusively in one of my female veiled's enclosures and it's VERY effivient for her to walk around, and theyre squiggly and natural.

I was mostly concerned about the vines being somehow related to poison ivy - I've seen vines growing up trees with either poison ivy or oak, but I don't think that's what these are. Thanks again.

I cut off some branches of my mom's wisteria (oops!) and those vines are incredible.
