New Snake Owner with lots of questions

Aradia Jun 21, 2003 05:30 AM

Hello all. This forum was recommended by a lady I have been emailing some of my questions too. I recently bought a baby corn almost 3 weeks ago. I have tons of questions and a desire just to seek Snake lovers out, I think I have found the perfect place. My lil one is only 6 months old and so tiny it seems, its precious. I named her Eden. I have two questions

The first being, she has not eaten in almost 3 weeks. She has yet to eat the first time from me or being here. Is this normal.

The second is what should I expect with her growing. Do they grow fast or is it slow.

I have read and studied tons of information, my problem is they all say different things and gets me so confused. Thank all of you in advanced your help is greatly appreicated.

Hello and welcome. Scan this forum for info, but first...let's get a meal into Eden. Try this: Cut the head off a pinky and offer it to her. Don't wait for her to "find" it...either place her in a small containter with it, or dangle the headless, bloody part right where she will flick her tongue and taste it.
I have a little snow corn that did not eat for me for two weeks, and the first time I did this, she went right for it.
Make sure she has enough warmth to digest, water, and a couple of places to hide. The rest can wait. Good luck. Duffy

Thank you for the suggestion. I will try this but before I do, what do you suggest is enough heat to diagest, also, I am assuming it was a live pinky right? I'm sorry for so many questions, its just all the petstore and books have me so confused, I'd rather ask people who have owned and does own them. Thank you again.

What have you been trying to feed it so far? Do you know if it was eating live or frozen/thawed before? On the one hand, most snake keepers these days will try to maintain there animals on frozen rodents which have been properly thawed. Some snakes, often babies, will not take prekilled prey right away, but will accept live. BUT...if your snake has been eating frozen/thawed pinkies in the past, a live pink may have startled it. I was suggesting frozen/thawed, but if what you have on hand is live, then still try cutting the head off...that would certainly qualify for prekilled.
What are the day and night temps in your home right now, and do you have any supplemental heating for the snake? My home here in Ohio is starting to warm up to the point where I start unplugging my heaters, but lots of folks use them year round, especially if they use air conditioning in there house.
Is your snake "sniffing" around at the prey, maybe pushing it around, just not eating? That's what my little snow corn did before I used the beheading trick. I placed her in a small deli cup with the pink, and she ate it right away.
If your new snake is as small and frail-looking as you say, you really want to get a meal in him. Go ahead and try the headless pink thing, and let us know how it goes. If you don't have any extra heat, you will want to consider it, especially if your house temps are cool. A warm side and cool side for your snake's cage is the best setup, but if your house gets and stays quite warm in the summer, you might be able to get away with the normal day/night fluctuation in temps. Let us know how you have your snake set up right now, and we will try to make suggestions.
Again, check out some of the old posts below...you will learn alot. Good luck, and let us know when Eden eats her first pink.

they do feel pain! I also suggest that you try putting the snake into a small brown paper bag (lunch bag size) with the pinky, fold down the top (watch out for the snake's head or tail), tape it shut and put it into its tank with the lid closed (to ensure it doesn't escape from its tank).Do this at night and then leave it alone for the night. In the morning, VERY carefully open the bag (you don't want to jar the snake if he has eaten and cause it to regurge. Leave the top open and let the snake crawl out into its cage. There are lots of other tricks to try if this one doesn't work.
