Is a moist hide necessary?

axawl Jul 11, 2004 07:21 PM

If it is, how can I make one/where can I buy one?

You must have at least one humid hide per leo. It helps them escape, as well as helps the shedding process. Numerous leos have lost toes to bad sheds, and a humid hide helps that.

Easiest way to make one: cut a hole in an empty and clean butter/margarine container, put paper towel on the bottom, and spray it with water once a day to every other day. This is the best way for hatchlings/juvies. For adults, you can use vermiculite or perlite instead of paper towel. You can also substitute any container about that size.. but be careful about which type of paint you use if you decide to paint it.

you can construct one quite easily. take a butter or margerine containter (plastic tub kind), with the lid on, cut a 2 in hole in the side of the containter. fill the bottom with either moist paper towels, sphangum moss, or perculite. the hide should be moist, but not have puddles of water in it. you can mist or redampen the substrate within the hide every day or every other day to keep it moist. this is the most cost effective way to do it, as you can readily buy one at a pet store, which will run you about 10 - 12 bucks.

Here is a pic of the spot I built for my two. Just a shallow rep dish, some spanghum moss and a wood hide. They spend about half their time there. I change their water every day, so whenever the moss is dry i just pour their leftover water on it.
