question about patternless leos' tails -- spots or nots??

alieliza Jul 11, 2004 09:11 PM

My boyfriend and I picked up a leopard gecko the other day that was marked "leucistic". It cost us 70 dollars. The gecko is a bright yellow (sort of orangish) in color. The tail, however, is almost half orange, and the other half is spotted.
I was wondering if patternless (leucistic) geckos have spots on their tails. It seems to me that every one that I have seen do not have spots. There are no spots on its body or head at all. Is it possible that we actually got a super hypo?
I will post a pic as soon as I get my hands on a digital camera.
Thanks for any responses

so when you say this, are you telling me that patternless leos never have a spotted tail??
I will try to post pics asap.... im glad about this.
My question though, is how does this happen? Is someone (breeder petstore) just unknowledgeable? Do they think that a leo with no spots is automatically a patternless??

The problem with the leo though, is that some of her toes are damaged from bad sheds..... but all in all i think it is a great buy, she is really a beautiful gecko.

Sorry, I forgot to answer that part. All patternless geckos gave no spots on head, body, legs or tail as adults. As juvis they have more of a blotched pattern but no spots.

The confusion probably started with the supplier mislableing the gecko, or shipping the wrong one. It must have continued with the petstore manager/ employees not knowing the difference. This is also a way for inexperienced buyers to get ripped off. In this case you got licky...unless you were really in the market for a patternless and not a super hypo tangerine carrot tail baldy. Hey If you don't want it I'll take it off your hands !

Don't forget - you also have blizzards! Banana blizzards sometimes look similar to patternless - and regular blizzards look similar to very white patternless... But only as adults.. Others may not agree with me, of course, but I think they look similar. You can especially tell as babies - patternless babies start out with very splotchy bodies. Blizzards start out as solid white.

But if they have spots - well, they ain't patternless OR blizzards. You got LUCKY.

We got this leopard gecko with the intention of breeding. She is probably around a year old, about 50 grams or so. From what I am hearing, sounds like she may be a super hypo tangerine (carrot tail baldy??). The male that we have is a hypo tangerine poss. het rainwater albino.
Do you have to breed a super hypo to another super hypo to make super hypo babies??
If we breed her to the male i described above, what will the outcome most likely be?
Thanks.

It kind of depends on which genes get mixed with what. You probably wont get another baldy out of them unless the male has very few spots. I can almost guarentee you some gorgeous babies if the male is a hypo tang. But hey you never know what your gonna get really. The baldy phase started somewhere right?
