Does anyone have a rundown of what states spotted turtles are legal to collect or possess? Any insight would be helpful. It seems they are protected in most states now. Thanks.

Spotteds are legal in MD, so long as you have proof that you acquired them out-of-state or before the regs went into affect about 11 yrs ago. You'll have to get a permit from MD DNR, renewable annually, $25 permit fee. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/captive.html
If you don't have a receipt for the turtle(s) you have now, the call the permit coordinator and ask what they would consider proof. I'm thinking that a vet record of a vet check before you move would be OK. I believe that Mary Goldie is the current permits coordinator, and she can be reached at (410) 260-8540.
Remember that in MD it is still technically illegal to breed turtles, so if you were producing young, I wouldn't announce it by selling them on the classifieds forum.

Ask Jeeves.com .. type in your "state" Wildlife Dept. Look for Reptiles, etc. Hope that helps.. I do know about SC. Email me if that will help.
