Gecko finally ate after weeks...but then threw it up...

axawl Jul 11, 2004 11:32 PM

My gecko has been sick...He had not eaten, and his right eye is swollen. He has shrunken to nearly skin and bone. I thought it may have been a Vitamin A deficiency so I put some liquid vit A in his water. I finally got him to eat a Waxworm today, after several weeks of not eating. I came home and he had thrown it up, completely undigested. There is no vet that looks at reptiles nearby...I don't know what to do. What else can I try...Thank You

If the leopard gecko has not eaten for a long time, throwing it up is not that uncommon. The digestive system is just not ready for such a large meal.

I would try Fluker's Repti-Aid for Carnovores. I have used it in the past and I noticed It usually helps a non-eating leo get some strength back if nothing else. It also allows you to give the leo a 1/2 dose of normal daily carolies, so hopefully there is no chance of regurgitation. I got mine at Petco for $10, but I know it is available on the internet for similiar pricing after shipping. You also absolutely need to find a vet! Call one of the others around you and ask if they know anyone who deals with reptiles... they will usually know one or know where you can call to find one. It might be a little bit of a drive depending on where you live though.

Thank you for the tip, I will pick some up tomorrow morning...
I called a vet in the nearest big city..He wouldn't tell me anything on the phone. I can't afford the fifty dollars plus the gas to get there...Plus any medication he would give me.

Try hand-feeding the lizard. Get some meat baby food or Science Diet A/D canned food (from any vet's office) into a syringe and put it right up to his mouth. He should lick it from the syringe. Mix some calcium into this as well as any electrolyte solution (ie pedialyte, fluker's, etc.). Are you sure your problem is a calcium deficiency? See if your local pet store can give you any anti-parasite medicines....Panacur is the one I have used. They might have some in the back if they deal in reptiles. With hand-feeding and a lot of TLC, the majority of my geckos have healed themselves.
