About that gorgeous red coachwhip picture....

kw53 Jul 12, 2004 10:26 AM

As much as I wish that I had taken that picture, it was posted by Erik McCormack (sp?. I am the one who called it to Michael's attention, although I did not specifically mention that someone else had posted it, so it's not Michael's fault he credited me with the image. Apologies to Erik, and also congratulations on an excellent shot--he made the most of that opportunity, for sure--outstanding!

The thread below has a consistent theme, I notice--that being, when you chase the "nasty" cophis (I love it), you pay, whether you catch one or not. One recently got a hackberry tree to make payment on its behalf for my attempt to grab it. I looked like an Ocelot had climbed up my leg.

Interesting how coachwhips, which are real generalists as to their diet, have such a well-developed suite of foraging strategies, like Drys, also generalists. Drys and coachwhips sure act like the smartest American snakes (not to impugn the rest of American serpentdom--they are all just as able as they need to be, and all wondrous), and they might be. I did catch one of my captive coachwhips using the phone to call for a rescue...

i recognized that pic as one of erik's immediately. kinda unforgettable. .....erik may well be one of the better field photographers out there today. his life list of photos can be viewed at another site and it'll take you quite awhile to see them all and they are all locality/date specific! really, really good stuff! re: breeding coachwhips rob, i have been breeding them for a number of years. western reds, normal westerns and of course, easterns......my personal favorite. also various racers too. i did not breed any 'problem feeders' though this year as i needed time off from that TASK! as difficult as dry's can be, neonate 'whips and racers are much worse......same attitude but w/ smaller heads. last summer, 'i thought i was gonna die'!.......if you're still interested next year, drop me a line. i'll probably pair some up this spring.........dannio
