New born baby burms How long?

jimv Jul 12, 2004 10:35 AM

I have 24 new born Albino burms that hatched out over the weekend. I can't find any information regarding their first few months. Do they shed after 10 days like boas, I read somewhere they may not eat for a month or so. can anyone shed some light on this for me?

thanks once again forum readers!

Jim

You can feed them any time you want. When they are first born, you don't have to worry about feeding them right away because they are still absorbing yolk. Sometimes, you can even see a lump in them where it is being absorbed. That being said...I offered rat pups, and most of my babies ate, the day after they came out of the egg. The ones that don't eat rat pups will usually chow down on a mouse. It will be easier though, in the long run, if you can start them on rats.

They will go through a shed about 7-10 days after they hatch, regardless of whether you feed them or not. However, for the most part, they should not hesitate to eat almost immediately.

Good Luck.

Tom,

Thanks alot! They are nippy as hell, unlike all the boa's I have produced. This is my first clutch of Burms, and I expect them to calm down after a few meals.

Thanks again for your insight!

At that age, they really can test your patience. There have been a couple of times that I just wanted to pinch their heads off. They will calm down but expect some bloody knuckles for a while. I have over 120 babies right now and I know I've been bit by every one of them at least once. I hold them about every other day when I clean their tubs and give them fresh water. The first ones that I clean get a nicer version of me than the ones that get me towards the end of cleaning time.

It will take some time but baby burms are notorious for being little snap dragons. Don't think that yours are particularly aggressive. They will turn out fine.

Good luck.
Tom
