What could be the problem

Lies Jul 12, 2004 12:11 PM

I have 2 captive collareds, i'm pretty sure one's male and one's female as i bought them both together and one is bright yellow and the others just a greyish/brownish color (bicinctores). I've had them since the very beginning of the year and have never had any problems til this past week. I believe they're less than a year old or maybe a year at this point, they're only about 9 inches in length. Recently they've been biting each other behind the neck. At first i didn't know if they were trying to mate or something or whatever, since it was the yellow one doing it, then my greyish one started to do it to him. They've been doing this quite a bit lately and it's really starting to bother me. One will bite and hold down on the back of the others neck, and the other moves around but the other stays locked on and won't get off. You can usually tell when they're about to do this because their head twitches before they go to bite the other. Can anyone have possible reasons for this or solutions to get them to stop other than separation?

Thats what they do, they (headbob) then the male will try and mount the female and grab her by the neck to hold on.

If both are doing this, maybe you should check to see if you possibly have TWO males! Feeling their oats, but not really FIGHTING yet.

If so, when a bit older they may get really nasty with one another and inflict injury!

I would check the sexes of these 2 before I do anything else, if you need help there are many on here that will help you, let us know!

i've seen the pics where you look at the bottom scales above the tail to tell the sex but i really have trouble figuring it out, if i posted good pics of their bottom sides would you be able to tell for me?

^^ I've noticed they both have a row of larger scales right below the vent... this is no good

Then what I was telling you may be the case, you may have 2 males !
