riiotgrrl Jul 12, 2004 01:11 PM

My beardie and i were outside today and she pooed. When i went to pick it up i noticed that there were red crystal type things in her urates. They resembled sand...and she is on purple calci sand....so that could be. Has anyone ever heard of bright red parasite eggs? if it was blood i think it would be black. Could it be hardened urates?? I am taking her poo to the vet tomarrow when i take the iggy. are there any ideas please help.

Sounds like the sand.. Calci sand is horrible stuff, it does not digest and can rip up and impact the digestive tract. If I were you I would get her off of it immediately and throw the stuff away, it's worthless and only causes problems.

its purple calci sand tho. the red stuff was in her urates.....i thought that calci sand would be digested. She is almost 3yo and she has always been on it.

Then she probably has a good pool of it in her stomach and intestines.

It does not digest.... not even in acids.

The red you are seeing is probably not the sand itself, its the dye from the sand after going through the digestive system or it could be blood from abrasions in the intestines and cloacal.

Most people that have keep their reptiles on this, will find some sand trapped in the cloacal of the animal.

Here are URL to a report by someone that did use it, lost some animals and then tested it in various mediums to see if it was digestable.
