Please tell me what kind of snake...

tawnygirl Jul 12, 2004 01:15 PM

I saw a snake on the side of the road here in Louisiana, and I have never seen that color snake before.

It was jet black on top of the body, and underneath it was red.The brightest red there is.

I'm just curious, what kind is that?

I don't know how the head was shaped.

Are they venomous?

No, they don't even bite. They are totally inoffensive snakes. The worst thing they do is musk (which smell pretty bad!) and they have a pointed scale on the tip of the tail with which they might try and poke you. It doesn't hurt.

Like Chris said, they are not only not venomous, they are very inoffensive creatures. Most people who like snakes are always happy to find mud snakes. For one thing, they are just very pretty animals.

Probably a mudsnake. Actually they are one of my favorite snakes.
There are a couple of pics at this link.
