diggy415 Jul 12, 2004 01:50 PM

I have alot of cottonwood trees in my area and the bark is knarly growing, and If i were to strip it's feather inside bark, has anyone used outside items in their tank after cleaning for their frogs and how did it work? What disenfectant did you use for it also. I hear frogs are water sensative to chlorinated water, so this got me thinking. thnks

I don't know anything about cottonwood, but I do know that amphibians are sensitive to clorine. To get rid of the clorine in the water you can buy a declorinator such as Reptisafe, wich I think also removes ammonia.

Cottonwood bark deteriorates rapidly in humid conditions, so isn't worth much in the usual humid frog terrarium. I use it a lot for woodcarving (castles and old men figures) and that's about what it is good for. If you want to try it and feel obligated to sanitize it, just boil it for 20 minutes and dry it out in the sun for a couple of days. It won't be "sterile," but won't have any pathogens. It probably wouldn't have any if you just used it after a brushing off, but I get arguments about this, so won't suggest it. The chlorine in water is driven off, so even if you boil it in chlorinated water, it's not going to affect the wood. Chloramines are more stable, but cleaning wood with boiling chlorinated water is not the same as providing untreated tap water for a frog soak.
