Tokay with bad shed...

TEKNOSYS Jul 12, 2004 02:33 PM

I have a rather large tokay who went through a bad shed a few weeks ago. The humidity was too low, so I added some reptile bark. Most of the stuck skin has come off now, except on his feet. Now he has a hard time sticking to the side of the cage. What can I do to heIp him?

Okay, we got him out of his cage tonight, and things are worse then I thought. We soaked his feet in warm water, and tried to remove what was left of the shed skin. His toes are in VERY bad shape. Some of them are a dark gray color, some of them look very raw and pink. It looks like he may have lost the tips of some of them. Is there anything that can be done? I'm going to try and contact a herp vet in the area if I can find one, and maybe he can put something on them to prevent infection. Does anybody know a good vet in South Florida/Palm Beach area? Here is a pic of the damaged feet

I've seen worse. I don't think this is ground to worry personally. Keep the humidity high for the next few weeks and they should clear up. The tokay's pads are self cleaning (one of the big mysteries in science....seriously) so they should take the shed off themselves as long as the humidity stays up. Soak him further if you feel necessary but I think this would only cause stress.

I forgot to mention that his front feet look a lot worse. Is it a good idea to put him back in the cage with the reptile bark? What about infection? Do you think finding a vet is worth it? Is there anything he could do?

I am not sure what the vet could do for you. I know he will take at least 30 just for the visit and most likely send you home with some sort of cream and advice. I would suggest small amounts of neosporin to prevent infection and help healing but I am not sure if you can use that on a gecko's feet. I think it is safe to put him in the tank with bark, just like I said, keep the humidity up. Try and call a vet and see if they have any sort of advice or anything to treat it.
