Fishing mealworms ok?

snoderly Jul 12, 2004 03:06 PM

Hi

I was just wondering if it was ok to by mealworms for my geckos from the local fishing store. They come packed in oatmeal, several hundred to a container. There is only one petstore within 500 miles of my house and it only carries crickets. (big pain to measure out exact food numbers). I usually end up just shaking a bunch into the cage for em.

Also, can I feed them wild crickets and grasshoppers from my garden? I'm thinking not, but I figured I would ask since they are abundant.

Fishing mealworms are almost definitely ok, however you can always ask the bait store what they use to gutload or feed the mealies.

I would not feed "wild" bugs ... you never know what kind of pesticides etc. they have in them, nor do you know what they've been eating.

However, there are literally thousands of places online that you can buy healthy feeders, delivered right to your door. I'd look into that if I were you. I live in a large Canadian city where all the feeders I want are available, but I get all my feeders online and, even with shipping costs, save a lot of money.

no they are not..ok..

they are treated with hormones and growth inhibitors that prevent them from turning into beetles and obtaining large sizes..the worm spends most if its life gorging itself and not transforming..

lots of onlines sites that sell them will warn ppl about this..

For the insect in your garden, the danger is that they have come in contact with herbicides or insecticides in your area.

mealies from the fishing store...I dont see why not, maybe somebody with more exp will have a different opinion.
