Bosc Died

tegu2002 Jul 12, 2004 04:08 PM

Our baby bosc died last Monday. Turns out that someone, not realising their own strength held the fragile baby too tight and so broke both of his shoulders. Poor thing. We have a little girl now. I want everything to be perfect for her and I was wondering if it was true that you should give them crickets aswell as pinkies every day. If so should I dust the crikets first for extra calcium or will the pinkies hold enough??

Hi Katie,

Sorry to hear your bosc didn't make it that sucks. As for your new one feeding schuedule, it is true that they should eat everyday but what you choose to feed and the schuedule you choose is entirely up to you. I feed crickets (all it will eat) dusted of course, on Monday, then pinkies as many as it'll take on tuesday, On wed- lobster roaches, Thurs- superworms, FridaY- Turkey diet then start again at the top.

So if you choose to feed a pinky or two plus crickets everyday, go for it if it'll eat them and you have a huge supply of both.

that all monitors are individuals with different energy levels thus requiring different amounts of food at any given time. A very active monitor will digest food alot quicker than a lazy one so its very important to watch and understand yours and feed accordingly.

No, it is only a baby. I am guessing that it is a girl because that is what the pet shop told me, and also does it being a girl or a boy change the way I should look after her (sorry it). I just think it is alot easier to call her a her and not an it.

as far as how it is cared for, well not until its older and begins to drop eggs(if its female). Girls can become very expensive to keep healthy if not bred because they will produce eggs either way and if the substrate isn't suitable they'll absorbthe eggs instead of laying. If they cant be absorbed then they'll have to be surgically removed by a vet. Females are just to much of a hassle in my oppinion and not worth keeping as a pet unless you plan to breed.

So now your saying I should get rid of my bosc monitor or something?? I think that she is too young at the moment to think about her laying eggs. And when she does get old enough I will worry about it then alright

Are you kidding me? Im not telling you to do anything! You asked if sex made a difference in the care which im sure you very well know the answer to and was trying to be sarcastic but instead of me biting that bait, i said no. I proceeded to add some extra info that i thought would be beneficial to you down the line(trying to be helpful)in case you wound up with a female. It wasnt to discourage you from keeping your animal thats your choice. I merely mentioned it so that you'd be aware that it happens, so that if this were to accure(down the road) you'd have some idea of what was going on.

When i said," they are more trouble than they are worth" i also mentioned that being MY OPPINION. I am allowed to have one. Aren't I?

Sorry if you thought otherwise, i must have not been very clear.

Maybe a sign of need for calcium in its diet. Mice can solve that...

tegu2002 Jul 13, 2004 02:13 AM

I did feed only mice pinkies, I will try calcium dusted crikets see if the new one is interested. She hasn't eaten anything yet so maybe she doesn't like the pinkies as much as the last one. This little girl is a bit sleepy as well but she isn't as nippy as the last little boy.

This is our bosc, we are a bit worried about her though as she hasn't eaten since we got her. I will be trying her on mealworms tommorow and then dusted crickets afterwards. Well here Lucy is:

Thanks for your advise

Did you even bother to let her settle in for a bit before trying to get her to eat and handle her? It can take a while sometimes. Handling an animal that's already stressed from being put into a new environment is only going to stress it out even more, and stress is hard on most reptiles. You should have let her rest a day or two before offering food, and then a week or so before handling her. Also check the temps. ALWAYS check the temps....all the time. They are very important to reptilian health, and it's a mistake I made recently because I was confused as to why my bearded dragon was hiding all day and it took me a day or two to figure out that his temps were a little low (he likes it so that the absolute hottest part in the cage is 115 or so, which makes the branch he likes to hang out on a good 100 degrees. Do you have any pics of your setup?

tegu2002 Jul 15, 2004 05:27 AM

Of course I left him and her a good three days before handling her and him and trying to feed him. Well now the little girl has just eaten her first pinkie. Because she was kept in a cage wih other little boscs at the pet shop, I don't think she got
enough food, because she is always so sleepy.

Here is a picture of the setup:

And one of her in it enjoying a drink of water:

Thanks for looking and helping me.
