first of all, are you ready for a new chameleon? they look like very easy reptiles to care for but they actually quite antiquated.

What kind of settup do you have for him? what kind of lighting?

yah i was ready for him his cage all setup with branches and a large umbrella plant in it with a heat lamp on top with a 60 watt bulb in it but my real question is what should i put my crix in for him to eat out of what do you use?

mister_pokey Jul 12, 2004 06:04 PM

i use a method called "putting crickets in the same cage as my chameleon"

Your chameleon needs a UVB bulb. or it will die slowly.

as for cup feeding i use a 32oz chinese soup container, when i have crix in it i put a lid on it and shake it lightly to where they wount try to jump out but just run around the bottom of it waiting to be eaten

ok thanks i'll try that

First, take that tape out of the cage like this frickin second. Between the moisture and humidity that tape will come off and get caught on your chams skin - which would be painful to take off. I know someone who had this happen. Cup feeding to me is a pain. I free range the crickets and take out ones that dont get eaten after about 10 minutes after lights out. That way i know what is getting eaten. There are no places for crix to hide - so I know I am getting them all. They tend to come out at night so if they are in the plants they move onto the cage. Some people cup feed just fine between breaking off cix legs, high cups, etc. - to me its just a pain though. Some peeps dont use crix at all but use bugs like silkworms or roaches which are considered by some "chameleon super food". Good luck.

i use a smaller kid sand pail(the kind u used to take to the beach when u were small)
and it already has a handle perfect for hanging on a branch.
my smaller cham has a popsicile stick glued to the edge slanting down so she can reach.
beauty thing is crix can't get out!!!!!

I use a 1lb deli cup (cottage cheese, hummus type) with a paper clip stuck thru the side and I hang it on the cage. Too high for them to crawl out but perfect for Luna. I have three different locations just to keep her thinking

thanks Lele i was thinkng of that and um how often should i put crix in there?

lele Jul 13, 2004 08:29 PM

whenever he asks! LOL! When Luna was younger and had her voracious appetite (and I was allowed to give her lots of food!) I would put in several and she would usually gobble them up. If I put in 10 and she seemed happy with eight then that's what I would give her, so you sort of need to figure out his preferences and habits. I would typically feed her in the morning and then around 3 or 4 p.m. Now that she's an old lady and being very picky I feed her once a day and if she doesn't eat them within the hour I take them out. Right now her thing is shooting supers off the screen.

What other foods will you be giving him? The ocassional waxworm is always something they love, butterworms, too - and of course silkies.
