Mealworm substrate

What do you keep your mealworms in to keep them healthy and active? Mine always seem sluggish in the sawdust and that does nothing to help their attractiveness to my leo.

I use a mixture of the store bought cricket food (Flukers), oats (the kind yoy get in the ardboard tube at the store), and different cereals like bran and crumbled shredded wheat. Then I through in some veggies like carrots, romaine and stuff.

Is just the Flukers and cereal okay or do you have to put moisture in there too? I'm new at this and I put Flukers food and orange cubes in with about 20 mealies and it was all moist in there with a couple small bugs after just a couple days. I ended up throwing some away because I didn't want to feed my gecko bad food.

Come type of moisture is recomended. Think of it kinda like this, when people eat they get thirsty, when people get really thirsty and they don't get a drink they tend to not want to eat any more because it will just make them more thirsty. I've just noticed that my mealies do better when I provide some type of "drink" for them. If you use the cubes or gels or veggies or what ever, just make sure to change it every day. I change mine daily and I've never had a bug problem. Hope tis helps.

I keep mine in wheat bran. Cheap and easy, my mealies reproduce well too.

Hey,
I have said here many times, don't waste your money buying feed from the grocery or pet store. Go straight to your local feed store and get chicken feed for layers, often called layer mash or layer crumbles. Just ask for the kind that is NOT medicated. The store I go to does not sell medicated. The ingredients are 100% identical to Fluker's Cricket Load. But Fluker's costs ~$3.50 for 12 ounces and I get the minimum sack size of mash for $2.23 for 10 pounds. Buy 20 lbs and it is only $4.00. That is WAY cheaper. What I do is bake the stuff in the oven on about 300degrees for 20 minutes just to kill any other eggs that might be present. Then I blend it to a fine powder. You don't have to blend. I do because it makes for easier straining when I change the bedding. You will have no problems producing a colony in this. I bought 3000 back in October and needed to buy more only in January, by February my first group was producing and now I have more than enough for our turtle, fish, and geckos. So definitely stop by a feed/farm store. NOt sure why everyone doesn't go this route.

Matt
