Breeding Bulls

kenr0212 Jul 12, 2004 08:21 PM

When breeding bulls, say the hypo stillwater, white sided, or ginter red bulls, is it considered OK to breed between these types. I know they're all bulls and we're not talking hybrids here but is the general concensus to keep locality's or morphs true by not mixings and matching or is it considered OK?

I'm thinking about purchasing some bulls but there are so many neat types. It's tough to choose

What two types do you girls/guys feel would make a good breeding project to yield a variety of colors in the clutch?

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Ken,
I bred a whiteside to a red bull and the babies were nice. I also have reds that are 66% het Stillwater hypo. I may even breed my speckled male to a whiteside female next year. I don't know what others think about this type of breeding. The locale thing doesn't matter to me, I go by what I like as long as they're pure.

Sounds fine to me as long as they are color mutations of the same subspecies. Just like breeding different morphs to get snow, ghost, or striped phases of color mutations. I think combining such traits will only enhance the hobby and create new exciting specimens. When do you expect white-sided/red bulls? I know Roberta was working with them a few years ago, but haven't seen any.

Well-bred animals will always be appriciated. Represent them honestly and you'll have no problem.

Tony,
That was the perfect answer wish I had said it. Ron

I was thinking about mixing hypos, reds and albinos as a new project here. I could imagine many interesting appearing bulls could come out of such a mix down the line. I'm probably late on starting such a project myself and would probably bet there are others almost there.

Anyone there/here yet? Pics?

Grapevine has it that Ginter already crossed the Kingsville red and the Stillwater hypo several years ago such that this is the second year F2s have been produced. Scott Crumbly cross the other red line into an albino. I'd like to see Zhaa cross his yellow "IL" bulls into the Stillwater hypo.

Interesting and thank you all for your input. Sounds like it's accepted to breed different color morphs/localities together kinda like corns. Thanks again.
