Safe plants for treefrogs

frogwatch Jul 12, 2004 08:53 PM

Is there a database for safe plants with common names, (no Latin please) for frogs and treefrogs? Is a Yucca plant safe for a treefrog if washed free of any pesticides?

Thanks

Steve

Usually just washing a plant will not rid of the chemicls, first rinse, then repot in new pot and new soil, don't add to the tank for atleast six weeks, giving the chemicals time to grow out.

Personally I wouldn't use Yucca for several reasons.

1) it has tiny hairs on the leaves that can poke and splinter into the frog. How would you like it if your bed was made out of a unfinish piece of wood that splintered every time you slept on it.

2) Yuccas grow very large. You'd have to pull it out of the terrariums before to long anyways

3) the plant contains a compond called sapaions (sp?). Basicailly a soap like substance that can kill lice. I don't know if the leaves have it but I know the roots do, and I can't imagine it being the best thing to absorb into a frog.

As far as washing a plant off before putting it in to a terrarium, I've done it a million times. I've bought plants at stores, taken them home, out of the pot washed the crap out of them, roots and all. (I'm talking spending hours at the sink until there is nothing left but the plant and roots left when I'm done) and planted it straight into a terrarium and I've NEVER lost a frog from any of the residual pesticides or fertilizers ( I have however lost several plants). But then again, I clean them till I'm satisified that there is nothing of the old potting soild left on that plant or it's leaves. But that's the chance I take.

Thanks for the Excellent info. The frogs seem to like their plastic plants. I will likely put an Devils ivy in the tank, this worked well with my other treefrogs.
