POLL: how do you like the way the classifieds are divided now?

daveb Jul 12, 2004 10:05 PM

whether you are a seller or a casual observer what do you think of the way the colubrid ads are set up?

I think we should be able to decide where we want to advertise a snake. For instance I know people who have advertised their rosy boas on the boa forum for months and as soon as they advertise on the colubrid forum they find a buyer. This is because the rosys, sand and rubber boas are smaller snakes and most boid people are into the large stuff, whereas the colubrid folks like the rosys and sand snakes.

Hi,
I think its good, I've thought for years now that there should be a hondo section, a mtn.king section, and then there should be a rosy and sand boa section, all these for classifieds. As a hondo and mtn.king breeder I would like to see it, not that I dont like looking at all the other snakes posted for sale, but if you have sections for each thing then you coyuld peep it if you want too, I like it,

I agree with bluerosy, though, we should be able to post in other forums too.

They only problem I have is when Im looking for several different kinds or just snakes in general to see whats available. There should be an "all snakes" forum, displaying ads placed in each subdivision, for those that are looking for anything good.

Also, the seach should be able to be set so that you can search a subdivision instead of everything. That way, you can put "albino" and tell it to search kingsnake posts only, so you wont end up with albino geckos and frogs and such.

You know sometimes this site takes categorizing stuff just a bit to far. It was nice to only have to surf one page "colubrids" to see what was for sale. Now we've got like four different pages to read and to me it's just a drag.

Others may like it but I don't.

I was wondering when someone would bring this up

Thats why I suggested not only split forums but another forum which has all snakes in it: boas, kings, rats, all of them in one forum so someone looking for several genres can use one forum, and have the split available for anyone who wants a certain type of snake.

Most of us who keep King's and Milk's also keep Corn Snakes. It will be harder for potential sellers to link up with potential buyers because when looking specifically for some type of King snake we will now NOT be wading past advertisements for other types of snakes.

The classified's were fine before - now they are becoming overly complicated, in my opinion.

However, it is still pretty easy to find what you want and if you are in a hurry I guess it may be faster to go directly to the stuff you want.

Just my opinion,

Before you were only allowed to post 3 ads in one section per day. Now with the breakdown, you are allowed to post 3 ads in corns and rats, 3 in other colubrids, and 3 in kings and milks. This doesn't really help me as all I keep are kings, chondros, and a couple pair of leucy rats. The only snakes I'm producing are kings, milks, and chondros. For those with multiple species, it's going to benefit them.

The software this forum runs on is absolutely terrible. as someone who works in the computer field I can tell you that there is MUCH better forum software available out there, most of them are totally free. A few examples are Beehive and PHPBB. I'm a member of many forums that use this software, there is a much greater feeling of community in these forums because of the way the software works.

As was mentioned earlier, you should be able to search sub-sections of the forum and the classifieds. You should also be able to do more complex searches, example, If I do a search for albino kingsnake in the classifieds now it will bring up every ad that has EITHER of those words instead of BOTH of those words together. I've tried all combinations of ' ', 'AND'... without success.

another thing I hate is how a topic will eventually be pushed to the bottom of the page even if it's a hot topic. this makes this forum have a very short attention span.

just my $.02

Here's a hint: PhpBB2 = bloatware. There is something good to be said about fast(ish) loading threaded discusion forums as opposed to graphic heavy boards.

Take the good with the bad, I guess. There are no such things as hot topics in this style of board. I, for one, am not willing to accept all the fancy, slow features of the boards you mentioned. I'm not a n00b either. I've ran all kinds of forums, from vbulletin to phpBB2 to phorum. High-traffic sites generally benefit from this style of forum (in terms of server load/bandwidth).

have you tried out Beehive? It is super fast and I love the left navigation frame. It makes for much easier surfing of the forum. check it out in action at a friends forum

Well for breeders of various colubrids its good. I can post 3 ads for pits, 3 ads for kings whereas before I could only post 3 total. Wish they'd create a hognose section also. Rosy, Rubber, and Sand boas should have their own section just like Ball pythons do. jmho, Ron
