What species of anole?

hecktick_punker Jul 12, 2004 11:07 PM

The pet store I work at recieved 9 anoles yesterday. They were caught in the wild by someone who vacationed in Florida earlier this year. She wanted to get rid of them and gave them to us. Two of them are deffinetly green anoles, A. carolinensis. The other seven look kind of like brown anoles, A segrei, except the two males have a "sail fin" running the length of their back. They are a dark chocolate brown with very small yellow/creme stripes running vertically down their side. Their dewlaps are orange/red and yellow. Are these just impressive male segrei or are they something else? Thanks for your time and advice,

Cant help you, but they are very common down here, and seem to get larger then other brown anoles.

It looks like you may have a couple male Crested Anoles (Anolis cristatellus) though they are restricted to only a few neighborhoods in Miami, Fl. In April I went down and collected a couple pairs myself and the dewlaps are a different color. I think that's what you've got.

I can tell you right now that they arent ristricted to a couple neighborhoods in miami. I live in orlando and they are fairly common sight. They might have spread farther then people thought.
