Traveling - PLEASE HELP!

ZeroX Jul 13, 2004 11:42 AM

Okay, I've gotten myself in a short of predicament. I am going to maryland and virginia for a week next Tuesday and I can't get anyone that I trust to take care of my gecko, Xeero.

I am afraid if I leave him with food for that long, the crickets would injure him or the mealworms would turn into beetles. And I don't know if it's safe to take him with me.

I am so lost! Please help!

my advise would be to put in a dish or two of mealworms. Make sure the dish is one the mealworms can't get out of and even if you do get a couple of beetles it won't hurt anything until you get back. Also make sure they have plenty of water to. We travel from the Philadelphia area to Virginia all the time and we never have a problem. Hope this helps.

Also, you can take a small water bottle (like perrier) and open it. Then put the top back on, then poke a pinhole in the bottom. If you put it on top of the cage when you leave, it will slowly drip to keep the water coming when you're not home. He should be OK for a week like that, just feed him right before you leave and right when you get back, as long as its an adult.

Thanks for the help!

But Xeero is like...three months old. He's still a baby and he's about five inches long. Will it still be okay to leave him home alone?

Well, I don't know. It really wouldn't be GOOD for him. Where are you coming from? If you could get someone to come in even once to throw a couple of crickets in there, he could go for 3 days or so w/o much hardship. Truth is, if he's got good fat reserves, it won't kill him. (that was not a guarantee) If he's a good eater, you could try and get him to eat some freeze dried crickets or mealies before you leave, so that u could just leave some of them in the cage. Mulberry farms also has roasted waxworms, but i never tried them. also make sure to leave cacium for him.

I'm in MD and can watch him for week if you want to transport him there back. How long is the trip?

if you want to swing through B-more, I will watch him for you for a week. He should be OK for a few hours in the car if you pack him right.

leave plenty of water and a feed him a nice sized meal before you leave. Feed him normally when you return. It sure will not hurt your gecko. 1 week is not long at all.

Even if he is growing at 3months at 5 inches he should be fine. You have to remember that your leo does not get the excerise that it would get in the wild. All it will do is get fat if you feed it too much. So it definately will not hurt it to miss a meal.

When I was gone for 2 weeks I had someone come by and change water and feed mine. That was worth the $50 to me..even though he almost drowned my dekay's snakes.
