Need reliable thermostat regulator for Hovabator.

mingdurga Jul 13, 2004 12:39 PM

Fed up with placing kinky babies in the freezer because of constant temp. malfunctions. The Hovabator wafer thermostat is about as reliable as a politicians rhetoric. Replaced parts you're supposed to, but still getting bad results. Need a good thermostat, that won't cost an arm and a leg. Any good recommendations appreciated. Will check out new incubators this winter where I won't hear the word "wafer" as main heat source or backup.

Thanks,

Mike

I had the same problem with my Hovabator. For my next eggs, I have picked up a BAH-1000 Thermostat from Big Apple. I take the hovabator wafer thermostat and turn it up to its max setting, plug it into the BAH Thermostat, place the probe in with the eggs, and set the BAH to the proper temp. Then plug the BAH in, and there you have it. Should be a lot more stable then the wafer POC.

I use a dual setup with two Ranco 3ZP77 thermostats on my Animal Plastics rack. Boaphile Plastics sells a similar setup for $190. I opted to save a few bucks and bought my Rancos at www.grainger.com for $59.75 each and wired them myself. Also I saw someone selling incubators at the San Diego IRBA show and they were also equiped with Rancos.

i'm curious, how much temperature variance do you get with the rancos?

The heating element in my rack is routered into the back panel, so with the Ranco set to turn on at 81F and off at 83F, the rear of the tupperware bins stay at 80-81F and the front stays at 76-77F. I check temps with a RayTek Infrared thermometer.
