New baby tegu

madeleine Jun 21, 2003 11:44 AM

Just a picture of my new Chacoan. This was his first baby picture (right out of the packing crate last Wed., hence the newspaper). He's eating well. He just ate ten crickets in one sitting a little while ago, and is now tolerant of my watching him or putting my hand in the cage. He's not using his cave on the cool side of his cage, though he does wander around over there, but rather has created a burrow under a branch near his basking spot, so I tucked some moist spagnum moss in the burrow to make sure it's humid enough. I'm going to go get a branch today to place near the cave on the cool side in an effort to lure him over there more. I'm not handling him yet, as I've been giving him time to settle in, but I guess I need to start doing that soon now that he's less skittish.

cute
I'm thinking of getting a hatchling red after I move (although my heart belongs to the albinos).
Both my tegus (B/W Arg)were from last years batch at agama, so I missed the green-head-baby thing.
Congrats!

Albinos are beautiful! I like reds, too. You know, I had no idea what I was in for when I bought a little uromastyx mali a few years ago. I didn't have him 24 hours before I'd returned and bought one of his cagemates, too. Three months later, I threw out the living room sofa to make room for monitor cages. I suppose it's a good thing my husband is terrified of snakes. I'd probably have had to throw out the rest of the furniture by now if I added those to the zoo (though I am eyeing a few pieces of furniture that are in a spot I think would better accommodate more lizard cages).

At least your obession started with a "real" lizard.
Mine started after my daughter wanted an anole from a boardwalk carnival. I got it for her even though I tried to explain to her that "lizards are sooo boring"....
....and now I'm the one with a herp room (ok, so I threw out the dining room set to HAVE the herp room, but that's why the house is on the market)
Who needs furniture when you can have wall to wall lizards from all over the world
I was thinking monitor just today...what type(s) do you have? I am in love with the argus...love at first site

I like the way you think! Wall to wall lizards! Right now the only monitor I have is a yellow ackie. I had a Sav, but he had to be euthanized in March. I do plan to get another monitor, but the new tegu is taking up the old Sav's space, and I have to add more supports in the basement before I put in another large cage (all that substrate dirt adds up to a lot of weight). I, too, really love argus monitors and have toyed with the idea of getting one. I think they're beautifully shaped, and many monitor-keepers believe they are the most intelligent species of monitor. Unfortunately, we live in one of those 1950's bungalow-sized houses, and until I talk my (non-reptile-loving) husband into a new house or get the basement cleaned out and finished, I know I won't have adequate room for one. Argus monitors aren't as large as the really big monitors, but having watched other people's argus monitor's, I think they're one of those types that deserve a room of their own in a house. They seem to be in constant movement. At present, I'm thinking about getting an arboreal type of monitor that requires more vertical space than horizontal. I'm looking into black roughneck monitors. (Their strange little faces always remind me of those muppet creatures in Dark Crystal!)
