I don't think turtles get pregnant. They become gravid and lay eggs but I don't think that makes them fat. Are you possibly feeding her too much?

You will know when she has eggs too because her back legs will look like they have bulges by the tail. She will also stop pooping as much. My friend had a RES that had eggs and you could see and feel the eggs inside her. If you push gentley on the bulges you will feel they are hard and round like eggs.

I know, gravid and pregnant are the same thing, right.

Technically they are the same thing, but when referring to a turtle gravid means that she has eggs to lay. The eggs may or may not be fertile. Even female turtles who have never been with a male turtle can lay eggs, they just won't be fertile.

Remember mature female turtles need land access for egg laying. Laying in water is not natural, is stressful and not all will lay in water. Many get eggbound and that is serious.
