There seems to be an epidemic of folks buying chams at chain pet stores who then come to this forum looking for help once their animal is showing signs of illness and MANY where it seems to be just too late.
If you have recently gotten a cham from a pet store (or even a breeder for that matter, they are not all responsible) PLEASE post the setup you have or are planning to get and what the store/breeder has told you about care.
Hopefully you will post and we will say - "yup, everything is perfect" but frankly, that is unlikely. Wouldn't you rather find out before you get it or only a week after rather than coming here in a panic with a very ill or dying chameleon?
I think most fellow posters would agree that the most important thing you can do before purchasing a cham is to make sure you have easy access to a vet who has experience with reptiles in general and in particular chameleons (herp societies can be contacted for references). They are not as easily found as a cat or dog vet and believe me, sooner or later, you WILL need one - we do not have all the answers and just like other animals not all problems can be dealt with at home. If you cannot find one in a reasonable distance from your home you may want to reconsider a chameleon. What will you do if your female becomes eggbound with a clutch of infertile eggs? What if a simple cut turns into an infection that is not responding to your home remedies? Those are only two possibilities. I am not saying this to scare you but to bring you an awareness and get you thinking. Cham are very unique creatures and we all love them. They are an easy impulse buy at a show or pet store – just don’t do it without knowing what you will be facing in order to keep your cham healthy for many years.
Another consideration is the cost – it adds up – an informative article to read www.chameleonnews.com/year2003/july2003/costs/costs.html
I just felt that this really needed to be said after the rash of seriously ill chameleons on this forum in just the past few days. So whether you are a new owner or thinking of getting one PLEASE heed the advice here. I am sure I am speaking for many fellow frustrated keepers.
